Medicine, Its Use And Remidies for Ailments - Acarbose

Acarbose (Ak-ar-boas) is a medicine which is used in diabetes mellitus.

How to use your medicine
This medicine is available from different manufacturers and in several different forms and so you should check the Patient Information Leaflet or the medicine label for exact details on when and how to take it and how to look after it.

How your medicine works
Acarbose has been prescribed for your current medical problems and should not be used for other medical problems. Do not share your medicine with other people as it may not be suitable for them and could cause them harm. In the same way, you should not use medicines that belong to other people.
The pharmacy label on your medicine tells you how much medicine you should take. It also tells you how often to take your medicine. This is the dose that you and your prescriber have agreed you should take. Depending on your response to the medicine, how the medicine works and the goals of your treatment, your prescriber may vary your dose. You should not change the dose of your medicine unless you are told to do so by your prescriber.
Diabetes leads to problems controlling blood sugar levels. Acarbose prevents blood sugar levels from becoming very high after eating so it can help people with diabetes to keep their blood sugar level under control.
It is very important that your blood sugar level is well controlled. Blood sugar levels which are too high or too low can be dangerous. Your prescriber or a member of your diabetes team will be able to give you information on how to recognise the warning signs of high and low blood sugar levels. They will also be able to tell you what to do if either of these occurs.
Warning signs can vary from person to person. If the usual warning signs of poorly controlled blood sugar levels change or disappear, you should contact your prescriber or a member of your diabetes team.

The amount of Acarbose you need to use will be worked out by your prescriber or your diabetes team. They may also advise you to measure your blood sugar regularly – they will show you how to do this. If you are having problems controlling or measuring your blood sugar, you should contact your prescriber or a member of your diabetes team.
people starting treatment with this form of this medicine will normally be prescribed a low dose. The dose will then be gradually increased. This is in order to reduce the chance of side-effects.
